Wooden worktops have been a staple in kitchen design for years, providing a timeless, homely look that at one point or another you have probably longed for in your space. Not only are they stylish but there is just something so authentic about having wooden furniture and units in your home. However as beautiful as this material is, it still has its positives and negatives. So with the aesthetics aside let’s weigh up the pros and cons.

Cons

Starting with the cons, one of the most important things to consider about wood is the maintenance. Wooden worktops require regular sealing to keep them in the best condition, stopping it from becoming porous and a potential germ trap. This is not only essential from a health point of view but in order to keep your surface in top condition!

Another feature of wood to be mindful of is that it’s a much softer surface than say granite, meaning you have to be mindful of scratching or preparing food on the worktops, so remember your chopping board!

The last point to keep in mind is scoring your worktop with hot pans which can leave unsightly marks. Fear not though! If you do happen to scorch the wood it can be easily sanded down and re sealed to look good as new.

Pros

Now onto the positives! Possibly my favourite benefit about a wooden worktop is how unique it is. Not only are two pieces of wood never alike but as they age they gain character, growing richer in colour as the years go by.

Wood is also really quite durable, being easy to fix if maintained properly. Its strong, natural and sturdy making it an excellent choice if you want something beautiful but also long lasting.

Lastly one of the main reasons people tend to lean towards wood is because it goes well in almost every kitchen space, being a timeless classic to design. It goes well with the majority of colours and the majority of kitchen styles. What’s not to love about that!

In conclusion

So all in all if you can commit to the maintenance, your new wooden worktop can be an amazing feature to your space that is perfect if you’re looking for something unique to you and your home.
